Good mental health is crucial for our overall wellbeing. As the then US Surgeon General, David Satcher, said in 1999, ‘There can be no health without mental health.’
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as ‘a state of wellbeing in which an individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.’
The global cost of poor mental health
The stresses of modern life mean that today, more and more people are affected by poor mental health. In 2011, untreated mental health problems accounted for 13% of the global disease burden. By 2030, depression is projected to be the leading cause of disease burden globally. Source: WHO. (2011). https://apps.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/EB130/B130_9-en.pdf
As a result, employers are experiencing lower productivity, higher absenteeism, and a loss of talent.
